Artificial intelligence

What does artificial intelligence already do in your daily life

You may have heard the word before: artificial intelligence, or AI for short. To some, it sounds futuristic, as if it only belongs in science fiction movies. But did you know that AI already plays a role in your daily life, sometimes without you realizing it? And that it will probably have an even greater influence in the future? Let’s take a look at what AI is, what it does for you, and what you might expect.

What is artificial intelligence anyway?

AI is a type of smart technology that enables computers and machines to learn from data, make decisions and sometimes even think as if they were people. Think of a computer that helps you search for information, or a robot vacuum cleaner that knows where it hasn't been yet. AI is making devices ‘smart’.

AI in your daily life

Although it may seem like something from the future, AI is already quite common. Here are a few examples:

Navigation and traffic
Do you ever use Google Maps or another route planner? It uses AI to calculate the fastest route, taking into account traffic jams and congestion.

Online shopping and streaming services
When you buy something online or watch a movie on Netflix, you get recommendations. This is AI that tries to predict what you find interesting

Your smartphone
Do you say "Okay Google" or use Siri on your iPhone? Those are AI assistants. They can answer questions, set an alarm for you or even read the weather forecast.

Health
AI is increasingly being used in healthcare. For example, a smartwatch can measure your heart rate and warn you of irregularities.

Banking and security
Your banking app uses AI to detect suspicious transactions, and spam filters in your email stop unwanted messages.

What does the future hold?

AI is developing rapidly, and the possibilities are constantly increasing. A few things you might see soon:

Self-driving cars
These cars are already in development and use AI to ‘see’ the road, traffic signs, and other road users. For now, they are mainly in tests, but in the future they can help the elderly to stay mobile, for example.

Virtual assistants in the home
Think of a smart speaker that not only answers your questions, but also turns your lights on and off, sets the heating and helps you remember appointments or medication.

Care robots
In the care sector, more and more robots are appearing that can help people with daily tasks, such as housework, or even keep company.

Smart devices
Refrigerators that know what's in them and give suggestions for recipes, or a walker that helps you navigate through the city?
