You already speak and write decent English but you feel you can do better. You still have to think too much about structures and words and you still sometimes take the occasional diversions via your mother tongue.

This English Vantage @combi course is spread over 2 school years. The first school year you follow part A or part B and the next school year the other part.

Alternately, you work on your written skills at home, via our online learning platform (level Vantage 2) and on your oral skills in class (level Vantage 1).

What will you learn?

In this course, you will learn to communicate clearly and confidently in both professional and personal contexts. We use current events as the basis for the speaking and listening exercises. We practise vocabulary and important grammatical structures in order to communicate fluently, not only in class but also when travelling or at work. You will also learn the typical formal and informal sayings that are peculiar to contemporary written language.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • apply basic grammar very fluently in oral conversations
  • follow television debates and engage your classmates in discussion and argumentation
  • give a fluent oral presentation on a topic of current interest
  • use more sophisticated vocabulary to replace words you have known for some time
  • empathise with the culture of the language area and communicate about it
  • express your opinion in e.g. a letter of complaint, essay and review
  • present information in, for instance, a summary, report and article
  • write a formal and informal e-mail on various topics 
  • give and understand instructions in, for example, a manual or recipe
  • understand articles and literary texts written for and by native speakers

To register for this level, you must have a certificate of English 6 (= English Threshold 4).

Do you have this but can't find it anywhere, or do you already know decent English? Then you can take a short level test at the school office or on our website. If you score satisfactorily on this, you can enrol for this level.

For the distance learning part, you must have a PC or laptop with a fast and stable internet connection, a sound card and possibly a webcam. You must also have sufficient computer skills.

The price is composed of:

  • The legal enrolment fee: € 480
    (Subject to a decree amendment. Decree amendments take precedence over the centre regulations.)
  • Course supplies: € 12 (including course material and/or digital material and/or raw materials, ...)

Number of class times: 120 (including evaluation and deliberation)
