About the course

Do you know the basics of Autodesk Fusion and do you want to learn how to design for 3D printing? In this comprehensive follow-up course, you will learn how to design functional and technically correct parts that are truly easy to 3D print. You will learn step-by-step how to:

  • Design in Fusion with 3D printing as the starting point
  • Take into account the capabilities and limitations of a 3D printer
  • Work with tolerances, fit, and clearance
  • Design functional and moving parts
  • Take into account strength, material selection, and printorientation
  • Smartly divides large models into multiple printable parts
  • Designs connections to accurately assemble individual parts
  • Converts existing models and objects into a usable Fusion model
  • Prepares your design for the slicer and 3D printer

Using practical examples, you design, among other things:

  • Hinges
  • Click connections
  • Threads, bolts and nuts
  • Mounting points
  • Moving parts
  • Print-in-place parts
  • Large objects consisting of multiple parts
  • Replacement parts for existing or broken parts

From design to working part

During the course you will learn the complete workflow:

Idea → Fusion design → slicer → 3D print → testing → modification → reprint

After all, a model that looks perfect on the screen is not automatically a good 3D-printable design. That is why the emphasis is on designing, printing, testing, and improving.

You learn to use Fusion and your 3D printer not as two separate tools, but as one whole. This is how you develop the knowledge and skills to independently design more complex, functional, and usable 3D-printed parts.

Entry requirements

This follow-up course is intended for students who already have a basic knowledge of Autodesk Fusion and want to expand their skills with a strong focus on 3D printing and functional design.
